Such a fun time of year! The kids are so excited about the change of seasons, wearing long sleeve shirts, raking leaves (not!) and one other thing...what was it? Oh, yes...HALLOWEEN! Costumes, candy, trick-or-treating, more candy, the pumpkin patch, candy, the corn maze...you get the picture!

How perfect that the theme for the Etsy Bloggers Team Carnival is:

Halloween is just around the corner. What is the best Halloween costume you've ever worn or designed for someone else to wear? What made it so special?

When I read the question I knew just what I would write about. In October 2000, shortly after we were married, my husband and I joined several friends at a bread and breakfast located in a little blip of a town called Volcano for a Halloween party.

I made my costume a couple of years before...a huge coat from a thrift store laid out on the floor as I hot glue gunned faux fur around the edges, a bright red purse I found for $1, a wig from a costume shop, and voila! I'm Cruella De Vil. But this year was different. My hubby decided to take it to the next level and dress as a huge Dalmatian puppy. I'm not sure if I'm more amazed that he wanted to do it, or the fact that we actually found a costume in his size.

Add a black leather, spiked collar and a cigar and we were quite the couple. I recall we even won a prize in the costume contest. And just think, one puppy that size could make a couple of coats!

Just Breathe

I've been reminding myself to do that a lot lately.

We're in one of those crazy phases in our lives right now with so much change it's hard to keep up. The light at the end is bright and we know we'll get there soon, but no routine and no consistency is tough on my "plan-everything-try-to-maintain-control" personality!

This ring is one of the first pieces I created when I started Punky Jane almost two years ago, and it's still one of my favs!

And I wear mine everyday...just in case I forget.

When I look at the work of my buddy Vickie Porter of In My Head Studios, I always think to myself (after I take in the pure art and beauty), "I seriously could never do that!" The obvious patience and attention to detail she has astounds me. Just look at the detail in this piece....

It's all about the backpack

In our house, back to school always means a new backpack, lunch box, and cool supplies to fill them up.

While shopping with two under-10 girls is no easy task, they've learned to make their selections from the displays with a big "SALE" sign above or those wonderful little orangey-red clearance stickers at Target. Good girls!

This year, Tinkerbell's sparkly fairy wings and Paul Frank's space monkeys won. The Tinkerbell pack even came with a little velcro band for the front so the wearer looks like she's wearing a skirt. Pretty cute.

School started extremely early for us this year. The hardest transition, of course, was bed time and then getting up earlier, but these two packs helped make the first day of school even more exciting.

Let's hope the excitement (and the packs!) hold up for awhile!

The Before [and a little bit during]

It's finally done! Well, almost.

Anyone who's taken on a DIY project around the house knows that the word 'done' is an elusive little bugger.

I guess it's safe to say that I'll be able to move my Punky Jane studio into the new space soon. And to be a little more specific: very soon.

I thought I'd share a few pictures of the transformation.

First, THE BEFORE:

After emptying out the room, I had to test paint colors right away. Stormy Sea or Frozen Pond?

Frozen Pond wins! I love the way it looks with the white ceiling and the flooring that my sweet husband rescued from the dump. [note the whacky angle of the wall. The room started out with this odd shape...it's not just leaning!]

We have a running joke in our house that he comes home from the dump with more than he took. But when I look at this floor and the bike he built for our 8 year old from 'dump parts,' I can't help but be impressed.

It all started [again] with a "one little Winnie the Pooh for a friend's grandchild as a Christmas gift."

Reading the profile for the EtsyTwitter Team Shop of the Week, crochetgal, I just had to smile when I got the that line.

One of my favs from her shop is this Lace Butterfly Shawl...made me think of the flutterby from Winnie the Pooh.

And look at this amazing Shrug! The detail is amazing and it has a bit of a vintage feel with the 3/4-sleeve and the oversized collar.

Although I learned the art of crochet as a teenager in the 70s, it fell by the wayside as my life adventure took its path.

It resurfaced again at the start of the new millenium with one little Winnie the Pooh for a friend's grandchild as a Christmas gift. Before Winnie could even be delivered to that little one, friends were asking to purchase them from me. Little did I know that it would eventually turn into a small business. Within a few years, I was trying various methods of crochet, along with different pattern designs and before long I was actually designing a few simple pieces.

I love this quote, especially around graduation time.

We celebrated two special graduations in the last week. My daughter graduated from preschool and is now on her way to Kindergarten. Woo hoo! And my nephew graduated from high school and is now on his way to college.

Two big moments filled with such different emotions.

Watching my daughter graduate from preschool had me tearing up...knowing this was the end of so many things, but the beginning of so many more. Our little girl is growing up so quickly. It was clear as she walked to meet her teacher dressed in her bright blue posterboard cap and plastic gown (made from a garbage bag, I think), that our life was about to change. Routines would change. Attitudes would change. Responsibilities would change. People and places would change.

In those same moments, pure joy came over me as I realized that very soon both of our girls would be in the SAME school on the SAME schedule!

As I watched my nephew graduate from high school, I found myself reminiscing about my own high school graduation years ago. How had I felt at that moment? Did I have as much hope and was I as inspired as so many of these kids sitting in that sea of red mortarboards? Did I feel all grown-up while the adults in my life still thought of me as a "kid." What were my dreams?

Did I walk nervously across the stage to get my diploma, or did I have some flashy move to gain more attention and cheers from the crowd? How many classmates did I truly believe I'd keep in touch with? Did I even know who I was? As I recall, I walked nervously, thought I'd keep in touch with at least a couple dozen friends, and had no clue who I really was.

I remember feeling frustrated that I was staying in my hometown and not jetting off to some great location for a cool summer break and then off to start at some amazing college. In hindsight, I'm thankful I graduated and didn't owe anyone or any institution any money.

I also remember wishing I could focus on volleyball instead of working so much. In hindsight, I'm thankful that by the time I graduated from college I had worked in my field for a couple of years.

So, do I have any advice or wisdom to share?

For my soon-to-be kindergartner: Don't grow up too fast. And even when you feel like an adult, please don't stop being a kid. Always dream the way you do now...without worrying about what is possible and what isn't. I love you no matter what, and you will always be my baby.

There are wonderful changes coming to Punkyville. A new studio space that's not just a corner of the one-car garage is the biggest.

I'm dreaming of the chance to pick the wall color (and actually see the walls, I might add!), and decorating for me and only me (I know that sounds selfish, but you parents out there know how important a space of you own is).

I want my studio to feel like the beach...like I take a little vacation every time I'm in there. I know I'll have salvaged snap and click floors that my sweet husband rescued from the dump, and that it's still a relatively small space, but the freedom I feel is enourmous!

When I came across Sarah and the Orca by A Cagey Bee, I was taken away to somewhere happy. She looks dreamy, thoughtful, adventurous, hopeful and whimsical all at the same time. Plus, she's making that long, crazy hair look great in the wind.

I wanted to share her with you and she might just be hanging on my studio wall in a couple of months. Enjoy!

Growing up in a home with both artistic and creative parents, I felt that it was in my blood to become an artist.

Early on, I dabbled in almost every medium from ceramics, batiking, silk dying, watercolor, and sewing to photography, but it was in jewelry design that I found a good niche. When my father, a glass blower, gave me a book on jewelry design, I delved further into the art.

Although I had been crafting treasures for my family and friends, a great opportunity came to me when I was 17. A friend of mine was wearing a piece of my jewelry when she was shopping in a boutique. The owner loved what she was wearing so much that he inquired as to where she got it. Soon, I placed my jewelry in that boutique and my pieces began to sell. It was then that I knew I was onto something.

Going Green with PMC

To celebrate the EtsyTwitter Team's Go Green event, I want to share a few items from my shop that are made from recycled silver. (To see them all, click here.)

Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is actually a recycled product. During photo processing, silver is recovered. That silver is mixed in with a binder making a clay-like material that can be worked, rolled, formed, stamped, etc. and then fired to create beautiful, fine silver pieces.

I love working with PMC. I feel like I'm playing with Play-Doh! Expensive Play-Doh, but still fun. During firing, the binders burn away and what's left is a fine silver (99.9%) piece of art...hopefully!

Science Goes Sassy

I have to admit, this week's Etsy Twitter Team Shop of the Week had me hitting Wiki. While it's obvious the work of the mom and daughter team at My Sassy Glass is beautiful, I just had to find out what 'dichroic glass' is. What I discovered has me appreciating their gorgeous work even more! And as a bonus, I got a little science lesson:

From Wikipedia:

Dichroic glass is glass containing multiple micro-layers of metal oxides which give the glass dichroic optical properties. The invention of dichroic glass is often erroneously attributed to NASA and its contractors, who developed it for use in dichroic filters. Dichroic glass dates back to at least the 4th century AD as seen in the Lycurgus cup.

Multiple ultra-thin layers of different metals (gold, silver), metal oxides (titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, magnesium) and silica are vaporised by an electron beam in a vacuum chamber. The vapour then condenses on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure. This is sometimes followed by a protective layer of quartz crystal. The finished glass can have as many as 30 to 50 layers of these materials yet the thickness of the total coating is approximately 30 to 35 millionths of an inch (about 760 to 890 nm). The coating that is created is very similar to a gemstone and, by careful control of thickness, different colours are obtained.

Dichroic glass is now available to artists through dichroic coating manufacturers. Glass artists often refer to dichroic glass as "dichro". The main characteristic of dichroic glass is that it has a transmitted colour and a completely different reflected colour, as certain wavelengths of light either pass through or are reflected. This causes an array of colour to be displayed. The colors shift depending on the angle of view.

I got the coveted email notification this morning from the Statsy Featurator that my Picture This personalized portrait necklace had been featured on the front page of Etsy in a collection of ideas for Mother's Day. Great way to start the weekend!

Etsy Sellers: What's Your Favorite EtsyHack?

Most of my Etsy-selling buddies are familiar with the amazing work of Ian over at EtsyHacks, and if you aren't, you should be!

Ian's wife is an Etsy seller, and he created these little gems to help her run her shop more efficiently. How lucky are we that they are good at sharing?

I wish there was a way to determine how much time I actually save using his clever little scripts, but I do know it's substantial.

I started using them in my PunkyJane shop several months ago, and have slowly been adding more. They've been running without a hitch.

While I'd have a hard time choosing just one, I have to say that I think I use the Contact Buyer the most. I just added Buyer Notes a couple of days ago, and I already see the time I'll save in double checking orders.

The scripts are so easy to install. Ian provides wonderful instructions for every step, from installing Greasemonkey to installing each script. Note that you must be using Firefox to use Greasemonkey.

Each set of instructions includes a before and after screenshot for the hack so you can immediately see and understand the benefit.

So what's your favorite? What's your "I couldn't live without?"

Don't be a Doofenschmirtz!

Phineas and Ferb. Those two cool kids just trying to figure out how to spend their Summer vacation. Creative, amazing inventions and a sister who's always trying to bust them, only to have their creation disappear right before Mom shows up.

Add in their pet, Perry the Platypus, who's really a secret agent fighting an evil scientist (Dr. Heinz Doofenschmirtz) and some great music, and you've got real entertainment.

This Disney show has become part of our daily lives. We [all] sing in the car to the soundtrack, especially "Today is Gonna be a Great Day." If someone does something not so bright, you might just hear one of us say, "Don't be a Doofenschmirtz." If we are looking for one our cats, we've been know to say, "Hey, where's Licorice?" in a very Phineas tone. I don't think a day goes by without one of my girls saying, just as Isabella does, "Whatcha doin'?" And we all enjoy checking out the Fridays when an all-new episode comes on. I feel a bit like we a 1950s family all crowded around the TV ready to watch The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.

Yesterday as I was checking out my blog reading list, one of my favs, The Handmade Spark, posted the instructions on how to make a Perry the Platypus Inaction Figure from the episode, "Toy to the World." I am sort of embarrassed to say this, but I seriously did a little happy dance.

I'm sending a big thanks to Tim Adam for finding this little treasure on Instructables.com and sharing. This might just be something we do this Summer...if I can wait that long!

Now to quote from one of my favorite songs:

This could possibly be the best day ever,
And the forecast says that tomorrow will likely be a million and six times better,
So make every minute count jump up, jump in and seize the day,
And let's make sure that in every single possible way,
Today is Gonna to Be a Great Day!

Let's Party!

Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!" ~Robin Williams

While Spring means the beginning of allergy season for me, the sneezing and itching is worth it when we get to party...in the garden, that is!

In Northern California, we've had a mix of sun and rain lately. The sunny days have been spectacular making me long for Spring even more. Planting my vegetable garden, watching bulbs emerge and blooms bloom, and witnessing the amazing party that is Spring.

A few of my favorite Spring moments last year:

Lavender blooming. So calming and peaceful.

Our Camellia is always one of the first signs
that the party is about to begin.

This week's EtsyTwitter Team Shop of the Week is my fellow Northern Californian, Mikiye of Mikiye Creations. Her work is simply amazing! Browsing her shop makes me wish I had known of her 10 years ago as I was planning our wedding!

While she specializes in elegant wedding jewelry and accessories, I could see many of her pieces working for everyday, or a trip down the red carpet.

Here are a couple of my favs...simply stunning!

I guess I can say I'm lucky since it seems all the women in my family have been very creative. My Great Grandmother was very much into craft making and as long as I can remember my Grandmother was making something. When I was young I spent most of my spare time drawing, painting, or trying to make something with Playdo!

I have always loved flowers. I have memories of helping my Grandmother in her garden. She grew beautiful Roses. When I moved to San Francisco I worked across the street from a fresh flower stand. I always visited that florist to wear flowers in my hair. I quickly became known as "the flower girl." When I moved back to Southern California I didn't have access to fresh flowers so I began to make my own floral accessories in early 2000. Before I knew it, I had people stopping me on the street and asking me at work where I got the beautiful flowers I was wearing in my hair. After making a few for friends and clients I began to realize people wanted my accessories. In no time I was "the flower girl" again. I was written up in W Magazine and featured in magazines like Essence, Teen People and Shape. My accessories also made appearances on the popular television shows: The O.C. and The Simple Life. Some of my celebrity clients include Rock Star Kimberly Cole, Kelly Osbourne, Paris Hilton, Lacey Chabert and Shaun Robinson to name a few.

Developing Mikiye Creations was the next step in my creative adventure. I take great pride in making very high quality accessories. I use silk flowers, Organza, Silk Dupioni, Taffeta, Satin, Silk Chiffon, Swarovski crystal, Freshwater Pearls, feathers, semi precious stones and metals. I am self taught so I am always learning and developing my skills as a designer. I personally make everything in my store.

Oh...now this is taking me back! Back all the way to my first Raggedy Ann Doll that I left on the bus taking her to show and tell in kindergarten. My favorite part? Always the sweet little 'I Love You' in a heart on her chest. *sigh*

Knitting is my passion that has its roots in childhood. I learned from my mom, way back when we were carving our needles out of dinosaur bones. And then, sadly, I fell off the wagon and embraced needlepoint and counted cross stitch for countless years (pardon the pun). However, being a woman of true grit and strong character, I saw the light and found my way back.

For a long time, knitting was an avocation and not a vocation for me. While others expressed their creativity through cooking or gardening or painting, I was clicking away on my needles. In sheer and utter desperation, friends and family finally convinced me to open a store on etsy. I just know that they were getting so tired of receiving scarves, shawls, baby blankets and hats for birthdays and every other special occasion! I recently took the plunge and opened Foxy G. Look What Punky Found :: Retro Granny Square Tote by Kim White Creations

I don't know where to start! This Granny Square Tote Bag beautifully crafted by Kim White Creations makes me smile. I takes me back to a couple of happy places!

First, it reminds me of an amazing afghan that my grandmother had in the traditional black-bordered granny square pattern. When we went for a visit, I always headed straight to the couch, grabbed the blanket off the back, staking claim to it for our entire visit. I don't even know if my grandmother made it, but whenever I see one similar, I think of her. I wish I had it today.

Then, I'm transported to my childhood, maybe 8 or 9 years old, and one of the very first purses I got to pick out all by myself...big deal!

Take a look at the inside of this wonderful bag. The fabric is so pretty! A very cool, retro looking textured fabric...like it could have been curtains or wallpaper in my grandma's kitchen.

hmmm...I wonder if Kim would create a custom order in the colors of my choice???

Look What's Next :: The Mark Your Calendar Cuff!

I'm very excited to show you a little preview of the next Mark Your Calendar piece I'll be offering...the Mark Your Calendar (tm) Cuff Bracelet!

I've been testing this new design in copper and am pleased with the results. I hope to have these listed in sterling silver within the next couple of weeks.

The band of metal is approximately 1" wide and could be cut to just about any length.

This design leaves the personalization possibilities wide open. There is so much area to stamp...the sky's the limit! For my sample, I've added our names. I've used our anniversary date and I like the symbolism of our names coming together on the underside of the cuff.

I'd love your feedback...please let me know what you think! Should I offer it in copper as well??

A little flakey

It's the middle of Winter.

We've been stuck inside because of the weather. For me, it's been rain. Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain.

I've been thinking about Winter. And snow. And how snow seems to make it more 'Wintery.' Although, I imagine that if I was shoveling myself out this morning, I might just have a different opinion!

I remembered a fun little activity thanks to the creatives at Barkley, that can help pass the time when you are stuck inside.

Their Make-a-Flake Snowflake Maker is a super cool Flash activity that lets you snip here and snip there, just like you're making the traditional paper snowflake. You can preview your flake, cut some more, and when your masterpiece is ready, you can save your flake to the gallery. You can even download your flake and print it out. Fun.

Here's how it works:

Perler Beads. Little colorful tubes that look like macaroni.

I've been known to sit at my dining room table with my two girls, sorting colors, following patterns, picking these rolling beads up off the floor, sorting again, ironing with the little piece of parchment...fun!

Even with my vast [snicker.] experience with these tiny beads, I can't imagine having the patience [or talent] to create the amazing things that Lauren of Lost Mitten creates!
