EtsyTwitter Team Shop of the Week ::
Ambient Lights

I'm thrilled to share this week's EtsyTwitter Team Shop of the Week, Ambient Lights...and when you see the two products I've selected, you'll know why!

Lavender and chocolate....two must-haves in my house! Granted, you can't eat these, but why not indulge your olfactory senses, save a few calories and maybe even clean your sink while you're at it?? Enjoy!

Lavender Aromatic Sink Freshener and Gentle Cleanser

This is brilliant! "Clean your sink and drain while you freshen the air! These powerful air fresheners will clean, deodorize and freshen the air all in one! Simply add 2-4 tablespoons of Ambient Lights Sink Freshener & Gentle Cleanser to your sink half full of hot water. Leave until water cools, then drain. It's that simple and fresh!"

Hot Fudge Brownie Warmer Melts Set of 6

You had me at Hot Fudge Brownie... "Each Warmer Melt is Hand Crafted will all natural Palm wax and has a beautiful crystal design when it's solid. This wax is not only natural and beautiful but it is also very easy to remove from your warmers, it just pops right out!"

Be sure to take advantage of this week's special: 15% off ALL items OR Purchase three 7.50 oz. 100% Soy Jar Candles for only $20.00 (regularly priced 8.50 each) (15% off does not apply to the 3 for $20.00 special, it is already more then 20% savings!)

In The Studio

The EtsyBloggers Carnival Theme for the end of September is "Show Your Face" and if you don't want to show your face, "Show Your Studio."

How lucky am I to currently be the featured artist "In the Studio" at Cafe Handmade?

I'll repost the entire interview here, but please be sure to stop by Cafe Handmade and browse their wonderful site. They've done any absolutely amazing job creating a community for handmade.

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT CAFE HANDMADE 9/23/09::

Hi there! My name is Sandy Simpson and I’m Punky Jane, the nickname my mom gave me when I was little. It was always reserved just for her until I started this little business last year. After working as a graphic designer for way too many years to mention, I needed a change. Having two beautiful girls, now 7 and 4, I really wanted to be home for them, and be there for all those little moments that really matter. I tried freelance graphic design from home, but was unable to concentrate with all the chitter chatter and pitter patter going on around the house. A friend of mine had a necklace with the names of her boys stamped on it. I knew I had to have one. As I searched for my perfect necklace, I realized that I might be able to make one myself. I thought, “I love typography. I love silver jewelry. I need a way to keep my creativity sparkling that doesn’t tie me to the computer.” I did some research, ordered supplies, and got going. I made a few pieces and discovered I really enjoyed it. My wonderfully supportive husband thought it was a good idea to actually start a business and go for it.

So here I am. Working at my kitchen table in the beginning was fine, but getting all the tools and supplies out and then having to clean them all up when I was done, was not. As I dropped my daughter off at preschool one morning, the perfect answer stood before me: an old green metal desk from the 1950s with a hand printed sign saying “Free to a Good Home.” Great storage, solid, vintage, perfect. I put it in our garage in the one corner that actually had some space left, added a folding chair, and organized my tools and supplies. This would become my studio space. While I have to wear fingerless gloves in the coldest part of winter, and I can’t be out there after 2pm in the heat of the Summer, my ‘open-air’ studio, I mean garage, has it’s benefits. When the garage door is open, I feel like I’m working outside…good for the soul!

I started out with just a few sizes of sterling silver discs and one or two typefaces, but now I am really enjoying learning new techniques and trying new things. I’m working with precious metal clay and just began etching. Both of these processes will allow me to do more personalized work and create unique designs. I love that I am still able to use my graphic design skills, whether designing my website or working with the letter spacing while stamping (I’m still looking for the undo button with my hammer, though). And I really have fun coming up with designs made from letters. I currently offer pet tags with hand stamped cat and dog faces, as well as a little bird design for Twitter fans, all created using individual letter stamps.

I have found that I have better success if I stamp while I’m alone and play music in the background. Fewer typos that way! The first few months, I listened to instrumental harp music to keep me calm, and it didn’t allow me to sing along. Last week I realized that I am now stamping (and singing!) to something like Martina McBride (the album with ‘In My Daughter’s Eyes’) the soundtrack from a show I saw in Nashville, “Always, Patsy Cline,” Norah Jones, or Gypsy Soul. I’ve also been able to learn so many new things, not only the actual design and production of my jewelry, but also the technology side. I’ve always worked on computers, but this has taken me to a new level. It’s a little ironic that I now spend so much time in front of the computer maintaining blogs, websites, etsy listings, twitter, facebook, you name it, when I just a few months ago was trying to get away from that.

I’m lucky. This business lets me combine so many of the things I really do enjoy, with the added benefit of creating pieces for my customers that make them feel good. I love working with people to create THEIR vision. Some of the best designs have come from someone simply asking, “Could you make a…” and then me trying something new.

I live in a relatively small town where word-of-mouth travels very quickly. My girls’ teachers have been some of my best advertising! While I do have some pieces in a local shop here in town, my best experiences come from the one-on-one discussions with my customers, whether in person, on the phone, via email or etsy convo, to find the perfect solution for them. I feel so good when someone gets back to me after they’ve given one of my necklaces as a gift so I can hear the reaction.

Being part of the Etsy Twitter Team is amazing. Team promotions, support, ideas from fellow team members, and learning to promote in 140 characters or less…priceless. I’ve gained SO much from this team I can’t believe it. Tweet a request or question and someone from the team responds in seconds! I’ve also become a member of the EtsyBloggers Team and the new Facebook Fans on Etsy Street Team (FFEST). I am having a blast meeting fellow Etsians and seeing their craft, not to mention working together to promote handmade.

I really hope to continue to grow my business and find those little things that set me apart…various typefaces, new techniques, new materials, and I hope to have fun while I do it! Best of all, I get to be home when my girls get home from school and even go on a special field trip now and then.

Macho Machismo

Vintage Butterprint Turquoise Refrigerator Dish at Macho Machismo

I've been on a vintage Pyrex kick for several years now. After all, it works great in my 1950s kitchen.

Since I'm into the yellows, golds and reds, I guess it's safe to share this little treasure from Macho Machismo [who admits in his profile to not being that macho at all].

This Amish-inspired fridge dish looks to be in excellent condition and is very reasonably priced at $6.50.

Be sure to check out the rest of his shop...you'll find everything from vintage tobacco tins to a sweet Samsonite train case. Enjoy!

BPR Designs

Dusty Lavender Contemporary Glass Soap Dish by BPR Designs

I feel like I wash my hands 300 times a day, and it gets tedious. Wouldn't this gorgeous handmade glass soap dish by BPR Designs jazz up the process??

Dusty lavender doesn't match votre la salle de bains? Contact Beth and she can make it in custom colors for you.

Don't need a soap dish? How about a serving piece? Her soap dishes are actually food safe...bonus!

From her profile:
I have always loved glass and have found a real joy in working with fused glass. Living in the beautiful Northwest, which is home to Bullseye and Urobos glass, warm glass was a natural choice for my next adventure, now that I have retired from the business world! I love the colors of nature and am drawn to those colors in my glass work. I love doing commission work and making your dreams into reality.

9/11

One of those dates where each of us can remember where we were the moment we realized what was happening.
  • I was in the office at my high school when President Reagan was shot.
  • I was at a friend's house when John Lennon was shot.
  • I was home alone when I heard about Princess Diana.
  • I was in my apartment getting ready for class when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded.
  • I was sitting in class when the Loma Prieta Earthquake hit.
These are a just few of the incredibly vivid memories I have of tragic events, but nothing compares to the way I felt when I awoke to the radio on September 11, 2001.

I normally woke up to music. I had an experience in college waking up to horrible news about a friend, and I vowed to never go through that again. In my groggy state, I realized that the DJs at a local rock station were talking, and not laughing. I knew something was terribly wrong.

I rushed to turn on the TV. Life would never be the same again.

What made this different? For me, the thing that set this apart from the other tragedies is that in this case I was terrified for my family and for myself. No one was safe. I sat with my husband and watched in total disbelief what was going on, and the bad news kept coming.

When things settled down a bit, over 2800 people were dead, and we were all different.

I think with my personality, it would have been very easy to just shut myself up in the house under the guise of feeling safe. But I couldn't. I was pregnant with my first daughter and had to focus on that. Having my sweet girl a few months later put it all in perspective for me.

Life is too short to be sad, be angry, do work you hate, worry too much about what other people think, and not dance and sing when you feel like it. Enjoy every moment. And if you do feel overwhelmed, focus on how lucky you really are. Happiness is contagious.

I now have two beautiful girls, and as hard as that can be some days, I still feel very lucky. I can make a difference in their lives by being present. I can play games and sing songs and record their puppet shows. We can have dinner together at the table and talk about our day. I can say [and mean] "I love you." I am lucky.

Starting Punky Jane Jewelry last year has given me an unexpected and wonderful opportunity to help others. Whether it's making a special piece to honor someone who has passed away, donating a gift certificate to an auction to raise money for a mother who became gravely ill at the end of her pregnancy, or simply blogging and tweeting about a fellow Etsian who needs help because she's been diagnosed with lung cancer, I know I can do something.

Do I do more now specifically because of 9/11? I don't know. I do know that 9/11 changed the way I think. I truly believe these small acts make a big difference. I have power.

The moral of this story? Think about the starfish..."it mattered to that one."

Shimmering Shack

CONTINENT'S EDGE by SHIMMERING SHACK

Once in awhile, as your browse the amazing treasuries put together by etsians, you come across something that simply takes your breath away.

Today, that happened to me. I want to share the talents of Shimmering Shack. And a big thanks to Suzanne at ThreePeats for finding it first!

Enjoy the soft peaceful colors. Enjoy the feeling that you are there, teetering on the edge of the earth. And while you are there, enjoy the rest of this talented artist's shop.

From her profile:
Inspiration rolls in on the breakers along the Pacific shores. Colors & moods shift with the fogbanks under the western sun. Light breaks through the marine layer, sparkles on the water, absorbs into the warm sand, rocks, & coastal vegetation.

Life feels simpler, clearer, more primal, in tune with the seasons, tides, weather & time. Sand warms your toes, wind cools your back, sun bakes your skin. Your pace slows as you listen to the rhythmic crashing of the waves & contemplate distant horizons & the Pacific’s deep mysteries. Your spirit lifts as you relax with the lizards & swim with the fish.

Here in Shimmering Shack's studios I’ve tried to capture the spirit of this place I call home. The contrast between the sparkling blue liquid of the Pacific & the toasty warm sand on the shores, the change of seasons, day to night; the slow passage of time to be savored at the edge of the continent, on the verge of the Pacific. The anticipation of travel, destination, discovery, & at last the realization of our oneness with it all. This is my inspiration. I hope that each piece I create carries a bit of this inspiration with it to you. Enjoy.

Once you get in a little deeper, you see a beautiful simplicity to Vanessa's handmade jewelry and cards. I wanted to share a couple of my favorites:

Pretty Birdie Cards (set of 3)

Blue Jay Earrings:
And notice that many of her listings include a little tidbit of information about the birdie honored in the piece. Very cool.
